Matariki is well known as the Maori New Year.
It is the Maori name for the star cluster Pleiades. The word Matariki, is and abbreviation of “Nga Mata ō te Ariki Tāwhirimātea” which means, “The eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea.” Traditionally, Matariki is a time to gather for Kai as a whanau, a time to acknowledge those who have passed and to release their spirits to the stars, as well as a time to reflect and be thankful for the harvest as we go into the colder season.
