A hands-on way to learn and use te reo Māori through the days, dates and months of the year.
This circular DIY calendar is inspired by the pūrākau of Māui slowing Tama-nui-te-rā, the sun. Its radiating lines reference the ropes used by Māui and his brothers to restrain the sun, while the kowhaiwhai pattern draws on the form of Māui’s famous matau (fish hook).
Rātaka is ready to assemble and personalise. The rotating dials allow you to set the day, date and month, making it both a functional calendar and an interactive reo Māori learning resource.
It works especially well as a wānanga activity. Participants can assemble their own Rātaka and write the kupu directly onto the dials as they learn them.
